Why Have a Wisdom Tooth Removed?

Wisdom teeth can cause serious issues and severe pain. If a problem is detected with the development of your wisdom tooth, it is advised that you have it removed as soon as possible. Below are the most common reasons for having your wisdom teeth removed.

Tooth Decay:   If your wisdom tooth is impacted, saliva, bacteria and food can accumulate around it, causing decay to the wisdom tooth or the tooth beside it. This often leads to a painful infection.

Gum Infection:  If your tooth is partially erupted through the gum, food particles and bacteria can accumulate beneath the gum, resulting in a local infection. This can lead to pain, swelling and bad breath. You may even find it difficult to chew or open your mouth fully. This infection can spread to the cheek and neck.

Pressure Pain:   When a wisdom tooth develops, it can cause a lot of pressure against the other teeth in the mouth as they try to make room. This can cause severe pressure pain, and can even lead to erosion of the other teeth.

Orthodontic Reasons:  If you have received orthodontic treatment to straighten your teeth, your wisdom teeth can compromise the results by moving the teeth out of place.

Prosthetic Reasons:  When a patient requires dentures, they are advised to have any wisdom tooth removed. If a wisdom tooth grows in beneath a denture, it can lead to irritation, and if removed, the patient will require new dentures as this changes the shape of the gums and mouth.

Cyst Formation:   A cyst (fluid-filled sac) can form from the tissue surrounding an impacted wisdom tooth. This can lead to bone destruction, jaw enlargement and movement or decay of nearby teeth. The removal of the tooth and cyst is required to avoid further bone loss. Tumors can develop inside these cysts, and they can even result in a fractured jaw if left to grow.

Do I Need to Remove an Impacted Wisdom Tooth If it Isn’t Causing Any Problems?

When a wisdom tooth is impacted, it is almost certain to cause issues if ignored, especially if it is a lower wisdom tooth. Impacted wisdom teeth are also notorious for causing severe pain. It is best to have an impacted wisdom tooth removed as soon as the problem is detected as to avoid any further issues.

Clinical Procedure

If the wisdom teeth are impacted and embedded in the bone, the oral surgeon will put an incision into the gums and remove the tooth or teeth in sections in order to minimise the amount of bone being removed. Some pain and swelling may occur, but it will normally go away after a few days; however, you should call your dentist or oral surgeon if you have prolonged or severe pain, swelling, bleeding or fever.
After surgery, swelling and tenderness in the face and neck are common, as is bruising. Ice packs and pain medications prescribed by the dentist or oral surgeon will help, but if you have any questions or are concerned about what you are experiencing, contact your practitioner.

Benefits of Wisdom Teeth Removal

From general oral hygiene to eliminating painful and unpleasant symptoms, there are many benefits to getting your wisdom teeth extracted.

  1. You may find it difficult to reach your wisdom teeth with your toothbrush or floss. This leads to a build-up of bacteria, sugars and acids that can result in a cavity. If not restored with a filling, the cavity may spread and damage more of the tooth and surrounding structures.
  2. Being so hard to access with your daily oral hygiene regime, this accumulation of bacteria and food debris can cause bad breath.
  3. If your wisdom tooth is still under the gums, growing in horizontally rather than vertically, this can put a lot of pressure on the surrounding teeth, leading to crowded and crooked teeth. This can also occur when there is not enough space in the jawbone or mouth to accommodate the wisdom tooth. You may require braces to repair the damage.
  4. While still under the gums, your wisdom tooth can become irritated. The gum tissue sitting over the tooth can accumulate bacteria and food debris and become infected.
  5. There is a possibility that further issues will occur the longer you wait and the older you get. This is because as you age, the jawbone surrounding the tooth becomes progressively dense making the tooth more problematic to extract. It may also take longer to heal.

Potential Disadvantages of Wisdom Teeth Removal

As with every medical procedure, wisdom tooth removal may also have disadvantages.

Depending on the size, shape and position of your wisdom tooth, removal can range from being a simple extraction to a more complex process. In the case of a simple extraction, you can generally expect little swelling, bruising and bleeding. More complex extractions will often result in more severe bruising, swelling and bleeding. These side effects can be minimised and managed with help from your dentist.

After your wisdom tooth removal, there is a risk of developing dry socket. This is where the blood clot in the extraction site is dislodged, exposing the bone underneath. This condition causes severe pain but can be resolved in a few days. You can avoid dry socket by following the post-surgery instructions from your dentist.

FAQs

  • What do I do if my wisdom tooth is causing severe pain right now?

Call us immediately for a same-day emergency appointment! Severe wisdom tooth pain won't go away on its own and often gets worse. We prioritize emergency cases and can usually see you within hours. Don't suffer through another night of pain - wisdom tooth extraction provides immediate relief. Take over-the-counter pain medication until you can get to our clinic.

  • How much does wisdom teeth removal cost in Seoul compared to my home country?

Wisdom tooth removal in Seoul costs $150-$300 per tooth depending on complexity. Simple extractions cost around $150-$200, while surgical removal of impacted teeth costs $250-$300. The same procedures cost $800-$1,200 per tooth in the US/Europe. Even with travel costs, most patients save 70-80%. We provide transparent pricing with no hidden fees.

  • Does wisdom tooth removal hurt and how long is recovery?

Modern wisdom tooth extraction is surprisingly comfortable. We use effective local anesthesia, and sedation is available for anxious patients. Most patients say it feels like pressure, not pain. Recovery takes 3-7 days depending on the complexity. You can return to work/school the next day for simple extractions. We provide detailed aftercare instructions and pain medication.

  • Can I get all four wisdom teeth removed at once in Seoul?

Yes! Many patients choose to remove all four wisdom teeth in one appointment to avoid multiple procedures. The surgery takes 60-90 minutes under sedation. Recovery is only slightly longer than single tooth extraction. This is more convenient for international patients with limited time in Seoul. We monitor you closely during longer procedures.

  • What if my wisdom teeth are impacted or haven't erupted yet?

Impacted wisdom teeth are our specialty. We use 3D imaging to see exactly where your teeth are positioned and plan the safest extraction approach. Even deeply impacted teeth can usually be removed in 30-45 minutes. Early removal prevents future problems like infection, cysts, and damage to other teeth.

  • How do I know if I need my wisdom teeth removed?

Common signs include: pain or pressure at the back of your mouth, swollen or bleeding gums around wisdom teeth, difficulty opening your mouth, bad taste or smell, jaw stiffness, or crowding of other teeth. Our surgeons will examine your mouth and take X-rays to determine if removal is necessary.

  • Are there risks or complications with wisdom tooth removal?

Wisdom tooth extraction is very safe when performed by experienced surgeons. Complications are rare (less than 1% of cases) and include dry socket, infection, or temporary numbness. We use advanced techniques to minimize risks and provide detailed aftercare instructions. Most patients heal perfectly with no issues.

  • Can I eat normally after wisdom tooth extraction?

You'll need to eat soft foods for 3-5 days after extraction. Good options include soup, yogurt, smoothies, soft pasta, and mashed potatoes. Avoid hard, crunchy, or spicy foods that could irritate the extraction site. Most patients can return to normal eating within a week.

  • What should I do to prepare for wisdom tooth removal?

Arrange transportation home (you can't drive after sedation), eat a light meal beforehand, take any prescribed medications, and wear comfortable clothing. Bring a list of your current medications and medical history. We'll provide specific pre-operative instructions during your consultation.

  • How soon can I fly after wisdom tooth extraction?

For simple extractions, you can fly 24-48 hours after surgery. For surgical extractions, wait 3-5 days to allow initial healing. Air pressure changes can cause discomfort in fresh extraction sites. Bring pain medication for the flight and avoid using straws which can cause dry socket.

  • What if I'm nervous or scared about the procedure?

We understand dental anxiety is common, especially for oral surgery. Our English-speaking team will explain everything and answer all your questions. We offer sedation options to help you relax completely during the procedure. Many nervous patients are surprised at how easy and comfortable the experience was.

  • Do you accept international insurance or offer payment plans?

Most international insurance plans don't cover dental work abroad, but our low costs make treatment very affordable. We accept cash, cards, and offer payment plans for international patients. Many patients find the Seoul cost is less than their insurance deductible back home.

  • How do I schedule an emergency wisdom tooth removal?

Call +82-10-3220-7928 immediately for emergency appointments. We prioritize patients in severe pain and can usually see you the same day. If it's after hours, leave a message describing your situation and we'll call you back quickly. Don't wait until Monday if you're in pain over the weekend.
